I was one of those kids who hated long trips. Matatu rides, train rides, flights, road trips…should I go on? The phrase ‘Are we there yet!’ literally struck a chord in me! Trust me, the trick to having a comfortable, stress free trip, whether long or short, is packing your carry on right.
The Right Bag
The first thing you have to consider, especially if one is a frequent flier, is the size of the bag. This can be easily checked on the airline’s FAQ page. Further, a carry on with lots of pockets and is soft sided would be ideal. For this reason, i prefer backpacks; where i can easily stuff it in crammed spaces and pack in bits and bobs in the pockets.
Passport Holder: To easily access one’s passport, boarding pass, travel docs, credit card etc a passport holder is quite convenient.
Toiletries: They can end up taking tons of space in a carry on. Buying smaller versions of your usual toiletries not only saves you tons of space, but you never have to unpack your toiletries until the next trip.
Entertainment and Electronics.
A bit of entertainment can go a long way in helping pass the time.Carrying something as mundane as a pack of cards can change the tone of the whole trip.
Laptops, tablets, books, magazines…anything that will occupy a child’s mind if travelling with one, or block out a talkative neighbor.
TIP: Pack a converter, just in case.
Change of Clothes
Accidents happen, a car may have a break down and you may end up having to stay the night somewhere unexpected. A flight may be delayed…you get the picture. Always pack a change of clothes.
Snacks: There’s always something about the open road that gets my apetite roaring. Or maybe pack a special sandwich for the flight back home.
Travel blanket/Scarf: For some reason I always find cabin flights beyond freezing. It’s a conspiracy I tell you!
Neck Pillow: Ever woken up with a stiff neck? It’s always good to invest in a neck pillow.
TIP: Pack items not needed until arrival at the bottom of the bag.
The best advice I can give you though? Be comfortable, enjoy the trip and Love Life!
