Giraffes are crazy looking animals with their immensely long legs and even longer necks poking up. But most of us have seen them in colorful TV-programs on Animal Planet or Discovery Channel along with perhaps a couple in a small enclosure in the local zoo.
In Nairobi however you can meet wild giraffes roaming about their everyday business of picking out leaves from treetops right outside the city borders. The Nairobi national park is a vast forest and savannah area protected against poachers and hunters, but otherwise left to the wild life to rule. A rather sizeable population of giraffes are living there in the Nairobi National park and with a little effort you can probably find them on a drive through the park as they obviously have a hard time hiding and are not that shy anyway.
As you can see it is possible to drive up very close to the giraffes if you approach slowly and without aggressive moves. They are quite nosey and are just as interested in having a closer look at you, as vice versa. For a guaranteed closeup of a giraffe you can enter the National Park walkthrough, which is a kind of expanded ordinary zoo with examples of animals from the park. At the moment they have a couple of baby giraffes trying their best to stand up straight on their long legs in the slippery mud.
Go visit the majestic Kenyan giraffes – theyre friendly and lets you come up close to say hello if you are respectful and peaceful in your act. Its well worth a morning at the Nairobi National park.
